Is There a New Norm?

by Rusty Stowe - Senior Adult Minister

NORMAL has been defined as conforming to a standard, a type, or a regular pattern. We use the term NORMAL to refer to something that most people feel comfortable doing. With this in mind, we might be able to define normal as a behavior that is typical, expected, and adjusts to a standard that society has put in place.

But when you remember the amount of people who live on planet earth, is it even possible to say something is NORMAL? What most of us used to call NORMAL would not be considered NORMAL anymore! Many people are asking the question, “When will things go back to normal?”  We may never see “normal” as we once knew it!

So just what is it about “normal” after all? We feel comfortable when we know what to expect and we find comfort in it even if it’s not good or healthy.  But comfort doesn’t always equate to health.  So, what if we chose to look for a life that is beyond the concept of normality?  What if we pursued a life that is better than normal?

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to live life differently. The world tells us to follow our hearts, but we know that hearts can be deceitful. The world says to have perfect bodies, but we know that Godliness should be our goal.  The world tells us to put ourselves first, but we know that living a life where we give to others is more rewarding and kind.

As we go through life, let us look to Christ Jesus and see how He wants us to live.  Let us set our “normal’ according to His word and His will for our lives.  In Romans 12:2 we read, “Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good , pleasing and perfect will.”

I look forward to seeing you in your place for Bible Study and worship this week!
