SEEK WISDOM

CLINT PERCEFULL

I have always enjoyed watching tv and movies with my children. Typically I would let them choose the show and it would be a funny cartoon or a Disney show, however lately one of my boys has began to take an interest in one of my “after they go to bed” shows. This program is kind of a documentary as it chronicles the attempt by two brothers to locate a century’s old treasure buried somewhere on an island. This show is in its 6th season, but the treasure has been sought for decades by numerous other searchers.

As I watch this show I am in awe at the time, energy, and resources they have used to try and locate the treasure. They have dug numerous giant holes in the ground using expensive equipment. They have cranes, metal detectors, excavators, ground penetrating radar, boats, drones, a wash plant, and numerous employees. They have even gone as far as constructing a huge dam that stretches out into the ocean so they can excavate an area of the island that was too wet in the past. After numerous years and millions of dollars, they have yet to find anything of real monetary value.

The book of Proverbs is classified as a book of wisdom. Throughout its verses one can read about wisdom and its importance. The book itself was most likely written by King Solomon who had the opportunity to ask God for anything he wanted and he chose to ask for wisdom. Proverbs 1-4 instructs us to seek wisdom at any cost and informs us of its reward. Proverbs 2:4 “and if you look for it (wisdom) as for silver and search for it (wisdom) as for hidden treasure,” and 3:13-16 “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.”

Imagine if we sought wisdom, true Godly wisdom, as hard as they are searching for this treasure on the island. Imagine if we exhausted our time, energy, and resources in the quest for knowledge of God and His wisdom in our lives. Imagine if we were consumed with this quest. That is my challenge to you, seek wisdom and seek it diligently. God’s word has told us that this effort will not result in an empty life, yet a life sustained by God and one filled with something more precious than anything this world has to offer.
